A tension economy

Slow burn is a budget. Every episode spends a little of the distance between two people and keeps enough back for the next one. He stands close enough to pass you the pencil and doesn't reach. He remembers the conversation and doesn't say so.

Thirty seconds suits it. There is no room to resolve anything, only to move one thing an inch and stop. Every episode ends on a held frame: a hand on an elevator door, a phone lighting up, a name he shouldn't know.

I should leave. I put my bag down instead.

Six tropes we build serials around

Second chance

Unfinished history walks into an ordinary workday. In After Hours, Daniel Park joins your New York architecture firm. The first elevator ride ends with neither of you speaking.

Forced proximity

A snowed-in hotel with one room left. A night shift with one break room. The easy exit is gone, but the choice to step closer is still yours.

Rivals to lovers

Two architects, one pitch, one desk lamp left on at 11 PM. His hand rests a thumb's width from yours on the trace paper, and the frame ends before either of you moves.

Late shift

The café isn't open yet. He's the only other person with the door code. He sets your cup down without asking how you take it.

The guarded one who softens only for you

He's short with everyone, including the client and the barista. Not with you. He waits until you're inside your building before he walks away.

The almost-kiss

His hand reaches the back of your neck. A breath. Then the knock. Your inner voice finishes the thought neither of you says, and the next episode is Thursday.

Heat settings and the 90210 line

You choose the heat. All three stay under the same ceiling, which we call the 90210 line.

Main Character heat settings
SettingWhat a scene can showTypical cliffhanger
Slow burnCloseness, held looks, no kiss yet.He almost says your name, then doesn't.
WarmAn almost-kiss, or a first kiss as the final beat. The elevator doors close.
SteamyA kiss, a hand at the back of a neck, a press against a wall or desk. Fully clothed.A knock, a phone, an interruption.

Never undressing, never skin below the collarbone, never two people in bed, at any setting, for any price. Every character on screen reads as 25 or older. The heat lives in hands, breath, voice and a held frame.

Who plays him

Romance apps have a casting habit, and it is usually the same man. Main Character's default is someone realistic for your life, drawn from your city and world with real diversity. It never defaults to a white man, and if you are Asian, the default is an Asian man unless you tap otherwise. Asian men lead our house serials, not only the best-friend roles.

Daniel Park, the lead of After Hours, is 34, Korean American, an architect who still draws by hand, with rolled linen sleeves and a scar through his left eyebrow. He is invented, like every love interest on Main Character.

You can also cast him yourself: ethnicity, age band (25 to 34 or 35 to 45), hair, build, style (suit, scrubs, denim, athletic) and vibe (warm, brooding, playful, intense). Once set, he is locked for the whole serial.

Where slow burn happens

Every serial has a few fixed places it keeps returning to, so the smallest change has somewhere to register: an architecture firm with one lamp on, a hospital corridor at shift change, a café before opening, a studio after everyone's gone, a commute in late light. Each place sounds the same every time you come back to it.

Swap in, or steal the hook

The Explore tab has house serials. Swap yourself in to become the lead of one, or steal its opening hook to start a serial of your own with a love interest you cast. Either way, your first three episodes are free.

Three nights a week

New episodes drop Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at 9 PM your time by default. Two nights to sit with Monday's cliffhanger; one night for Wednesday's. Or skip the wait and watch the next one now.

Questions

What is a slow-burn romance serial?

A story told in short episodes where the tension builds through closeness, looks and things left unsaid, and the kiss is held back for as long as it can hold. On Main Character each episode is 30 seconds and ends on a held frame.

How spicy does Main Character get?

There are three heat settings: slow burn, warm and steamy. Steamy tops out at a kiss, a hand at the back of a neck, or a press against a wall or desk, fully clothed, and then the interruption. Nothing goes further at any setting.

Who will my love interest be?

Whoever you tap for, or someone realistic for your life. It never defaults to a white man, and if you are Asian, the default is an Asian man unless you pick otherwise.

How often do new episodes come out?

By default Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at 9 PM your time. You can change the schedule or watch the next one on demand.

Can I start from someone else's story?

Yes. In Explore you can swap yourself into a house serial, or steal its opening hook and build your own serial around it.
